The welfare of captive elephants used in institutions, for recreation and in various ceremonies remains a global concern. Compassion Unlimited Plus action (CUPA) , WRRC’s sister concern, has taken a significant, proactive step by championing the adoption of robotic elephants as a direct, humane alternative to traditional practices. This initiative is not about stopping tradition; it's about evolving tradition to ensure compassionate coexistence.
This groundbreaking project is the result of close collaboration between CUPA, animal welfare organizations like PETA, and technological innovators. The goal was to create a replica so lifelike and functional that it could seamlessly replace a live elephant in processions without compromising the ritual's sanctity.
The success of this pilot program is evidenced by the increasing number of institutions willing to adopt this modern, ethical solution. The technology is now actively being used in four prominent locations across Karnataka:
On September 12th, the Yedeyur Sri Siddalingeshwara Swamy Temple (Tumkur District) inaugurated ‘Niranjana,’ the nation’s first mechanical elephant in a Muzrai temple, thanks to the efforts of CUPA and PETA India, with support from local leaders. This landmark gift ensures the temple can continue ceremonies cruelty-free, allowing real elephants to remain free in the wild.
CUPA(Compassion unlimited plus action), is collaborating with PETA to promote the use of mechanical elephants in Karnataka's religious institutions, aiming to replace the practice of using live captive elephants in religious events.
