HCLFoundation's partnership with the Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre (WRRC) at Bannerghatta has been a truly transformative journey under its HCL Harit initiative. The multi-year collaboration has been instrumental in upgrading the Centre’s capabilities, starting with essential day-to-day support and progressing to the implementation of state-of-the-art infrastructure. The partnership provided crucial funding for the core operations, including animal treatments, feeding, and general centre upkeep, while also initiating significant infrastructure development with the procurement of new animal treatment cages, upkeep and maintenance of old ones to create safer space for the rescued wildlife and enhancing security and medical facilities.
HCL marked a new chapter with the introduction of advanced technology, including an ultrasound machine for sophisticated diagnostics and a comprehensive CCTV system, HCLFoundation’s support has been vital in expanding WRRC's outreach, providing the resources needed for a new Interpretation Centre.
This centre in itself is a testament to what a truly progressive convergence between organizations working towards similar goals look like. It has become a cornerstone of the education and awareness programs, allowing the team to engage with the public, schools, and communities to foster a deeper understanding of urban wildlife and promote peaceful coexistence. The partnership has also equipped the centre with essential tools for field operations, such as a dedicated rescue van, which has been a game-changer for the safe and swift transport of distressed animals. Through this comprehensive and sustained association, HCLFoundation has not only addressed the immediate needs of WRRC but has also invested in its long-term sustainability, transforming it into a more secure, technologically advanced, and impactful institution for wildlife conservation and community education. A testament to the depth of this collaboration is the consistent and enthusiastic participation of the volunteers, who regularly sign up in large numbers to visit the Centre and provide invaluable services
At WRRC’s Elephant Care Facility, operating in collaboration with the Karnataka Forest Department, a pioneering initiative aimed at providing exemplary care for the magnificent elephants, the transformative partnership with Bosch Global Software Technologies (BGSW) has been nothing short of revolutionary. BGSW's unwavering commitment, manifested through significant and strategic infrastructure development, has not only profoundly elevated the standard of elephant care but has also meticulously laid the groundwork for a sustainable and scientifically advanced facility.
This partnership has created a holistic environment where these often-ailing elephants can truly thrive, where researchers can innovate, and where the broader community can witness a compelling model of responsible wildlife stewardship.
BGSW provided crucial funding that directly impacted the daily health and vitality of the resident elephants. This included the procurement of essential feeding supplies, meticulously tailored to the specific dietary needs of rescued elephants, many of whom require specialized diets for recovery from malnutrition or chronic conditions. Alongside this, their support ensured a consistent and readily available stock of vital medicines, including broad-spectrum antibiotics, effective anti-inflammatories, and specialized nutritional supplements, all critical for managing pre-existing conditions and addressing new health concerns promptly. A particularly game-changing contribution was the facilitation and setup of a state-of-the-art weighbridge. This robust and highly precise instrument is now essential for accurate and regular weight monitoring of the elephants. The direct impact of these interventions has been a dramatic improvement in the health and vitality of the elephants, many of whom arrived malnourished or suffering from chronic conditions like digestive issues or parasitic infections. Regular, precisely monitored feeding, now guided by accurate weighbridge readings, ensures optimal nutrition and allows for meticulous tracking of recovery progress. Their support enabled the installation of a solar-powered gate at the main entrance, significantly improving access control and operational efficiency. Concurrently, they funded the construction of robust and durable solar fencing designed to enclose the entire facility perimeter, providing an additional layer of security. Furthermore, BGSW's commitment extended to implementing a comprehensive CCTV system, ensuring the entire facility is covered by surveillance. BGSW's commitment extended beyond basic animal care, establishing a dedicated Training Centre and a comprehensive Research Centre at the facility. Their funding also facilitated the procurement of an X-ray machine for advanced diagnostics and a tractor for efficient maintenance. The implementation of rainwater harvesting and greywater recycling systems stands as a powerful testament to sustainable resource management and innovative environmental stewardship. The revitalized well now provides a reliable and consistent source of clean, potable water, addressing a fundamental and critical need for both the elephants (for drinking and essential bathing) and the facility staff. These initiatives significantly reduce the facility's reliance on external water sources, effectively mitigating the impact of the dry climate that characterizes Kolar, and serving as a powerful, tangible example of responsible water stewardship, thereby ensuring long-term water security for the entire facility. A standout contribution from BGSW is the funding for a specialized hydrotherapy pool. This facility provides immense relief for arthritic elephants by leveraging water's natural buoyancy to significantly reduce painful joint pressure, allowing them to exercise with less impact and discomfort. The natural resistance of water helps to gently strengthen supporting muscles, while carefully controlled warm temperatures and high-pressure jets improve circulation, reduce swelling, and alleviate chronic aches. This specialized treatment not only enhances flexibility and range of motion but also contributes significantly to the elephants' overall physical and mental well-being, helping them to regain a much better quality of life and improved mobility.
This project addresses severe physical and psychological distress captive elephants often endure due to inadequate conditions, aiming to provide sanctuary and restore their dignity and health. The main goals are achieving better physical and psychological health and establishing overall better Elephant management systems at the WRRC ECF. Key activities include providing nutritious feed, implementing enrichment activities, setting up a preventative healthcare program, and conducting key research on elephant behavior to enhance daily routines and management practices.
Animal Aid Abroad, Australia commenced its support for the WRRC Elephant Care Facility (ECF) focusing specifically on essential provisions for the captive elephants. This targeted assistance ensures the operational needs of the facility are met by contributing directly to the procurement of Fodder, Medicals, and Supplements. As an international non-profit organization, Animal Aid Abroad (AAA) is dedicated to improving the treatment and status of working animals in developing countries, working through partnerships to provide critical aid, medical treatment, and education to relieve suffering globally. Their involvement with the ECF aligns with their mission to support animal welfare charities and ensure proper care for animals in need.
Google Inc. has maintained a strong, long-standing association with the Bannerghatta Rehabilitation Centre (BRC), providing vital, sustained support that has allowed the facility to thrive for years. This partnership is characterized by generous donations that have been instrumental in ensuring the centre can consistently cover high-cost operational needs. Furthermore, Google's commitment extends beyond funding, with volunteer engagement ensuring its employees frequently dedicate their time to activities around the centre, significantly enhancing the BRC's capacity for wildlife care and protection.
The Murty Trust supported the Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre (WRRC) through a focused infrastructure grant for its Bannerghatta Rehabilitation Centre (BRC).
The Trust’s contribution was instrumental in the construction of essential access roads, significantly improving connectivity between the BRC facility and the main road—a critical need for timely animal rescues and operations. Additionally, the funding supported minor infrastructure repairs at the centre, helping to maintain high-quality facilities for the care and rehabilitation of rescued wildlife.
This support highlights the Murty Trust’s commitment to conserving biodiversity and ensuring the operational effectiveness of vital animal welfare organizations.
